Why Do Basement and Garage Floors Cost Differently?
Basement floors start around $8.50 per square foot and garage floors around $9.25, both quoted at 4 inches. Basement floors usually run larger, which brings the per-foot price down. Garage slabs also carry vehicle loads and, under local code, need air-entrained concrete for freeze-thaw exposure.
Size
Size is the main reason basement floors cost less per square foot. A basement floor usually covers most of the house’s footprint, while a garage floor is often a few hundred square feet, and bigger pours spread the setup cost further. See our Basement Floors page for that work.
Load
Load is the second difference. A garage floor carries cars and trucks, and heavier use can call for 5 to 6 inches with added reinforcement. A basement floor mostly carries foot traffic and storage.
Code Requirements
Code requirements treat the two slabs differently. New Castle County’s inspection checklist requires garage slabs and exterior concrete to be air-entrained under IRC 402.2, and interior basement slabs aren’t on that list.
Planning a Basement Floor
Planning a basement floor usually includes a vapor retarder under the slab, which the residential code generally calls for under interior slabs in living spaces to keep ground moisture from coming up through the concrete. If you’re finishing the basement later, mention it when we quote.
Pricing Both Together
Pricing both together is simple, since each is quoted per square foot at its own rate. Our post on concrete garage floor cost in Cecil County has a real garage example, and our Concrete Garage Floors page covers the service.
